Are you interested in Japanese culture?  Have you ever wanted to visit Japan as a student ambassador representing Berkeley and the Berkeley-Sakai Association?  Do you know that Berkeley has a sister city relationship with Sakai, Japan?  This summer in July 2019 the Berkeley-Sakai Sister City Association is hosting 5 students from Sakai, Japan. We are also looking for students who would be interested in participating in  this summers student exchange and in a student exchange to Sakai in July 2020.  If interested, please fill out this  Interest Form or Email a Berkeley-Sakai Board Member.

2019 Exchange - Sakai Students Visit Berkeley.

The Berkeley-Sakai Sister City Association will be hosting 5 students from Sakai, Japan, for 6 days, July 26 to July 31, 2019.   Host families will provide room and board for the student(s), participate in various activities in Berkeley, and provide one day of activities.  The Berkeley-Sakai Association will arrange for students to visit the Berkeley Mayor’s office as well as introduce the students to downtown Berkeley and the UCB campus.  Other activities/day trips will be arranged by the Association.  In preparation for hosting Sakai students, we would like to do a home visit, have monthly meetings, and plan for participation in various activities in and around Berkeley.

2020 EXCHANGE - Berkeley Students Visit Sakai  

The Berkeley-Sakai Association will make arrangements for 6 students and 2 chaperones to travel to Sakai, Japan for about 10 days during the summer of 2020 (either the end of July or beginning of August), with possible side trips to Kyoto, Nara and/or Tokyo.  Berkeley students will stay with host families in Sakai and in hotels when visiting other cities overnight.  Requirements include a US passport valid for at least 6 months after August 2020, attendance at monthly meetings, a group presentation (to be organized by student participants), and willingness to host a Sakai student either in 2019 or 2021.  Cost per student is approximately $2500 for airfare, hotel and food.  Full or partial scholarships may be available to students based upon need.
